Jobseekers and Tax credits 16 Jun 2011 12:15 #380

What will happen to my bank account when I am made bankrupt, If it is frozen my jobseekers allowance and childrens tax credits are paid into the account will I still get access to the funds or would I need to transfer them to my partners account.

Matthew,

You are allowed a basic account whilst bankrupt, and there are banks that will grant a basic account to bankrupts. We have been told Barclays and the Coop Bank will as long as you do not owe them money and you have no history of fraud. You can also inquire with the Post Office ass well.

Jon

Hi,

You can have bank accounts and access your benefit payments.

I literally just called Barclays through my telephone banking regarding this very same topic..

I opened my Barclays Cash Card account back in 2005 for my IVA.......A few years later I requested a Visa debit card as I needed to pay a variety of bills over the phone, and I could not do so with just a plain cash card.

My bank was and still is a Cash Card account and I do have a Visa debit card (no check guarantee card) with telephone and online banking. (NB: I do not owe Barclays any money, nor am I overdrawn etc - one of the few banks I dont!!!)

After a conversation with the Bankruptcy and IVA Information centre, I called Barclays on a special Bankruptcy number 0845 300 6073 where I spoke to a lovely gentleman who did not judge me and said the following:

1. I am entitled to keep my Cash Card account, and Barclays would'nt freeze it.
2. I could still keep my Visa debit card and that it would'nt be frozen.
3. My direct debits and standing orders would'nt be affected and would be paid providing I had funds in my account to do so.
4. I would LOOSE the facility to have online and telephone banking, and would have to go to my local branch if I had any concerns.
5. I could still access my benefits paid into my account (CTC, WTC, Child Benefit etc.)
6. Following discharge of my bankruptcy I would need to take my discharge form into my local branch and they would re-instate my online and telephone banking facilicy, but I would need to re-register with them.

I hope this helps for you or any one else. I thought this was very useful information and that Barclays were very considerate.

Take care x

Hi, Just update - Finally discharged from bankruptcy! Yey! Anyways, just come off phone from Barclays, and they have updated my dicharge. They have now removed the bankruptcy marker off my file, and within 24 hrs I can apply for online and telephone banking. They are also going to contact the credit reference agency with Barclays to remove my bankruptcy of there.

Take care all, Sam x
