I have been receiving a fair amount of people asking me if they can travel abroad or move outside the UK if they are bankrupt, and the answer is yes, you can move abroad or travel whilst and after being bankrupt.

There are no travel restrictions if bankrupt.

Your Passport is not taken.

The only issue is that as a bankrupt you are obligated to report any changes, such as moving to the Receiver handling your bankruptcy. This does not mean you would not be allowed to move, as again there are no travel restrictions, you just need to update them with your details until discharged.

Of course one question I have for people who state they are moving abroad or to OZ or America, is how are you affording this trip and move? It isn't cheap to make this type of move and since you are bankrupt and your finances reviewed by the Receiver, this is something to keep in mind.

Lastly I have also been asked frequently about leaving the UK with debts, not paying them, and then wanting to return to the UK. Will the debts affect returning to the UK?

The debts will not affect you returning to the UK, and no one will be waiting at the airport for you. Relax.

So hopefully this will alleviate some misconceptions floating about.

Regards,

Jon
