It seems increasingly difficult for the retail investor to get enough information concerning the strength of a particular bank. I am particularly interested in Anglo Irish Bank, which I believe is a plc registered in Ireland. Does it provide the same investor protection as UK registered banks?

It seems that the main threat to solvency is the quality of it assets, particularly if the bank has been irresponsible in the Retail Lending function. But most significant is direct/indirect exposure to the sub-prime morgage market through various instruments such as Consolidated Loan Obligations.

How can one get the information, or is it impossible because there is no requirement as yet to sufficiently disclose the detail in the balance sheet.
