Can I Keep My Basic Account In Bankruptcy?

Question:

I am a divorced single parent and am considering going bankrupt.

I already have a basic bank account with natwest as my credit history is poor. Will they let me keep this account. If not is it a good idea to open a post office account for benefits before I declare myself bankrupt. Would a post office account be frozen.

Answer:

You are allowed a basic account whilst in bankruptcy and having one set up ahead of time is fine, the issue is does that bank allow someone in bankruptcy to hold an account with them.

You can inquire with Natwest and the Post Office if they allow someone in bankruptcy a basic account.

To our knowledge Barclays and the Coop Bank allow bankrupts a basic account as long as they do not owe them any money and/or have a history of fraud.
