How Can I Get Credit After Bankruptcy?

Question:

I was declared bankrupt in Nov 04 and discharged 10 mths later,I am trying to reinstate my credit rating but cannot get any clear guidance of what steps to take,i have even tried the C.A.B.Can you possibly advise? I have had two building society accounts since Nov 04 and both have been kept in credit, but now I am approaching my 5th year of discharge I want to consider a credit card and at some stage a mortgage. I would be most grateful for any help.

Answer:

Once your bankruptcy has been discharged you can obtain a copy of the discharge from the court where you filed for bankruptcy. The court can charge you £60 for this discharge form. Send copies of the discharge to the (3) three credit bureaus, Call Credit, Experian and Equifax, so they can update your credit files. In addition, opening a savings account and showing a regular pattern of savings, then requesting a current chequing account. In time, asking for a small overdraft, £50-£100. These small steps will help to re-establish your credit.
